Mount Elgon National Park is one of the ideal Uganda safari destinations especially for hiking safaris in Uganda and Uganda birding safaris. The park is named after Mountain Elgon, an extinct massive shield volcano where the park is located. In 1940 the area became the mount Elgon Crown Forest, in 1951 made a central forest reserve and upgraded to a national park in 1992 and ever since then the there are several activities in Mount Elgon National Park that tourists undertake. Nature walks are one way to relax on a Uganda tour and on a safari to Mount Elgon opting for the activity is a great choice. Nature walks in Mount Elgon National Park are undertaken via different trails and these include;
Bamboo trail to Kapkwai
The 7km (four-hour) mountain bamboo trail to Kapkwai Cave passes through tropical and bamboo forest. Along the trail are many primates, birds and rare trees such as Elgon teak and Elgon olive. The 5km walk to the Chebonet Falls and 3km walk to the Kapkwai caves follow the ridge view trail. There is also an 11km hike to the Tutum Cave, with the option of camping overnight beside the cave. With several bird species this is a great trail to be followed by avid Uganda bird watching safari tourists.
Khauka Cave trail
In Wanale, a visit to Khauka Cave takes three to four hours. Alternatively you can go to the viewpoint through Nabuyoga loop where you can see Jackson’s Summit and Wagagai peak – 4321m above sea level.
Budadiri short hikes
In Budadiri, short day hikes are available covering the Mudagi Cliffs, Sasa River Camp and Drigana lower falls. These are great for birding safaris in Uganda, nature walks and overnight camping.
